Answer. $22$ and $30$
- Multiplication comes before addition: $4 + 18 = 22$.
- Brackets first: $10 \times 3 = 30$.
-
Answer. $-3$ and $18$
- $-8 + 5 = -3$.
- A negative times a negative is positive: $18$.
-
Answer. $12$
- Brackets first: $2 + 4 = 6$.
- $36 \div 6 = 6$, then $6 \times 2 = 12$.
-
Answer. $28$
- $2^{3} = 8$ and $5 - 2 = 3$.
- $8 \times 3 + 4 = 28$.
-
Answer. $-4$°C
- $-7 + 12 = 5$.
- $5 - 9 = -4$.
-
Answer. $-7$
- $(4 - 7)^{2} = 9$.
- $3 \times 9 = 27$.
- $20 - 27 = -7$.
-
Answer. £$40$
- $-45 - 15 = -60$.
- $-60 + 120 = 60$.
- One third of £$60$ is £$20$, so £$40$ is left.
-
Answer. $-28$, $31$, and mean $1$
- $(-2)^{3} = -8$ and $4 \times (-5) = -20$, so the first value is $-28$.
- $3 \times 9 - (8 - 12) = 27 - (-4) = 31$.
- The five numbers sum to $5$, so the mean is $1$.
