  1. An iteration is given by $x_{n+1} = \sqrt{3x_{n} + 1}$, with $x_{0} = 1$. Find $x_{1}$.

    2 marks

  2. Using the same iteration, find $x_{2}$ to $3$ decimal places.

    2 marks

  3. Show that $x^{2} + 4x - 1 = 0$ can be rearranged to $x = \dfrac{1}{x + 4}$.

    3 marks

  4. Use $x_{n+1} = \dfrac{1}{x_{n} + 4}$ with $x_{0} = 0$. Find $x_{1}$, $x_{2}$ and $x_{3}$ to $4$ decimal places where needed.

    3 marks

  5. Continue the iteration until you can give the positive solution of $x^{2} + 4x - 1 = 0$ to $3$ decimal places.

    4 marks

  6. Show that $x = 5 - \dfrac{2}{x}$ is a rearrangement of $x^{2} - 5x + 2 = 0$.

    4 marks

  7. Use $x_{n+1} = 5 - \dfrac{2}{x_{n}}$ with $x_{0} = 5$. Find $x_{1}$, $x_{2}$ and $x_{3}$ to $4$ decimal places.

    5 marks

  8. Use one further iteration, then write the solution of $x^{2} - 5x + 2 = 0$ given by this iteration to $3$ decimal places. Check it by substitution.
